Tips for your teens on writing exams!
Can you help to settle nerves and help them with their memory?
posted: August 2011
With matric prelims and end-of-year exams around the corner, many students are studying furiously (or trying to!). In all the chaos it’s sometimes hard to focus long enough to clear a workspace, never mind absorb information. But, thankfully lots can be done to optimize brainpower – so that information can be processed and retrieved from the far corners of the mind – pronto! We have searched far and wide for the best test-taking tips, so that you can pass on this valuable info to your teens and in the process help them to achieve their full potential! We’ve even included natural (and above all safe) study aids …

The brain is similar to a computer – made up of a multitude of networks through which information is absorbed, processed and stored for retrieval later. Just like a computer’s hard drive – the brain needs to be ‘technically’ maintained, in tip-top shape. In the case of the human brain, this can be done in numerous ways - and best of all – naturally!

Many nights spent studying are fuelled by bottomless mugs of coffee and sugary chocolate snacks. What most students fail to realize is that the caffeine in these foods and drinks can have just the opposite of the desired effect – and actually negatively affect memory. Prescription medications to stay alert contain artificial stimulants that ‘jolt’ the brain while increasing heart rate, leaving you with that ‘jittery’ un-natural feeling. A more healthy and effective alternative would be to snack on naturally wholesome brain boosting foods – like nuts, raisins and low fat cheese and veggie sticks, which all contain brain powering nutrients, to help you focus without sacrificing brainpower.

There is little point in keeping a students brain nourished, if his or her immune system gets run down. Added stress can lead to lessened health and a compromised immune system is likely to mean colds and flu, which in turn usually means a far more difficult time studying and learning! Using natural means to support the immune system and give the body a firm grounding during the period of increased work and mental stimulation can provide benefits without compromising study ability.

Natural Brain Boosters!
STUDYPLUS:
There are many natural remedies to safely clear the cobwebs from the mind and facilitate more focused concentration, without harsh stimulants. One such remedy is StudyPlus – a gentle, yet effective way to concentrate the mind on the task at hand. This remedy gives the body a firm platform to boost performance allowing the student to study longer without over-extending the body’s capabilities and without increasing the chance of burnout. What’s more, StudyPlus contains 100% pure Centella asiatica – also called Gotu cola. This herb is known to improve cerebral blood flow to the brain, ensuring that wonderfully oxygen-enriched blood flows through the brain – a key ingredient for memory and concentration!

A+ TESTCALMER:
Another aspect of student life that is over-looked is test anxiety. There is nothing more frustrating and heartbreaking than learning all the material, only to go ‘blank’ and freeze up as the exam lands on the desk. Thankfully, there is a natural helping hand for this too! A+ TestCalmer is another all-natural remedy that relaxes the student just enough to lessen any anxiousness over the exam, without sedation – leaving your mind ‘sharp’ enough to take a test, without over-stimulating the nervous system – and no side effects to worry about! Containing the homeopathic ingredients of Anacardium and Gelsemium known for their ability to reduce stage fright and boost confidence, this remedy also naturally enhances the brain’s own intrinsic ability to absorb and recall info – as it was designed to do!

IMMUNITY PLUS:
Last, but not least in the ‘exam-defense’ medicine chest of Nature, is Immunity Plus. Spending long hours studying, especially during winter, can leave the most conscientious student feeling rundown. Immunity Plus can provide that extra boost of energy for the immune system, re-charging the ‘batteries’. Hypoxis Rooperi (extract of African Potato) and Echinacea are both key ingredients in this remedy which is chock a block full of nature’s own vitality boosters - used to enhance the immune system’s ability to fight illness and fatigue.

So, in essence, once an immune system is supported, and the brain is equipped to function at it’s best – all that’s left to do, is to ‘hit the books’ – and start studying! Below are some useful tips to get things running …
Tips for studying
GETTING STARTED
Before you start studying in preparation for an exam or test, it’s important to be mentally and physically prepared. As early as a week before the exam, follow this sound advice:

  • Get enough sleep. Remember that old saying about getting eight to ten hours of sleep a night? Being well rested is perhaps the most important, and unfortunately most overlooked, aspect of health when trying to stay focused. If you are tired, your brain runs at lessened ‘speed’ and makes information assessment and storage more difficult. (Remember that yawning is your body’s way of trying to get more oxygen!)
  • Eat healthy. Most of the time in our busy schedules, we forget to take time out for our most obvious needs. If you are not eating well, you cannot possibly expect yourself to perform well in school, or anything else. Make sure you are eating right! Eating the correct balanced proportion of protein (chicken, fish or eggs) and ‘good’ carbohydrates, like potato and wild rice will give you mental stamina.
  • Get enough exercise. During exams make sure you are active for a small portion of the day. This doesn't necessarily mean joining a gym or starting a rigorous program, but make sure you keep your energy levels steady. Regular exercise, by the way, can also prevent insomnia! Remember, the more oxygen to your brain, the better! So take big deep cleansing breaths!

It is a known fact that the brain, like a computer, thrives on constant, steady routine. It is no different when it comes to studying. While creative study methods can be a great way to remember facts and absorb information, studying at regular intervals weeks before the test is still the best way to retain information long term. As the brain assimilates and stores information, ‘folders’ are created in the mind, where valuable facts and knowledge are stored. Ideally, at a later stage, all that is needed is a key word or phrase to recall a specific portion of information. Think of it as a computer search – when you type in one word or phrase, the computer then indicates to you where to find your document or file. The comforting fact is that information is never lost, just misplaced!
So what can be done naturally to help study efforts?
YOUR CHILD SHOULD:
  • Get enough sleep. Remember that old saying about getting eight to ten hours of sleep a night? Being well rested is perhaps the most important, and unfortunately most overlooked, aspect of health when trying to stay focused. This can be done naturally with Triple Complex Sleep Tonic. This remedy has been formulated in conjunction with a Clinical Psychologist to safely and effectively balance and encourage normal sleeping patterns. Using tissue salts, which occur naturally in the body, Triple Complex Tissue salts encourage sleep on a cellular level – without the use of sedatives! Best of all, there is no grogginess or sluggishness on awakening. Taken regularly during times of intense study as well as throughout the academic year, Triple Complex Sleep Tonic can help teens to maintain regular sleep patterns unaffected by the stress of exam times.
  • Nourish the body. Most of the time in our busy schedules, we forget to take time out for our most obvious needs. If a child is not eating well, he or she cannot possibly expect to perform well in school, or anything else. Make sure students are eating right! Brain foods, such as nuts, veggies and fish (rich in omega-3 fatty acids) should be incorporated into the diet months before the exam.
  • Nourish the brain. A growing body needs food, and so does a growing brain! Triple Complex Brain Tonic nourishes brain cells and cerebral tissue on a cellular level. Ever cell and tissue in our bodies contain tissue salts – and when these salts are kept in perfect balance, systemic health and harmony prevail. Triple Complex Brain Tonic is completely safe – as tissue salts can be used by pregnant moms and newborn babies too!
  • Encourage daily exercise. Although walking at school or on campus might seem like enough exercise – encourage your kids to be active throughout the day. This doesn't mean making them join a gym or starting a rigorous program, but make sure they keep energy levels steady. This, by the way, depends on a well balanced diet, and can also prevent insomnia!
  • Help them to focus while studying. Try to encourage limited distractions in the household while your child is studying. Re-schedule things like vacuuming, and record the game on television and watch it later. Make sure little ones in the house know not to disturb an older sibling, and try to keep them entertained outside in a quiet game. Remember that students need un-distracted quality time to absorb information. The brain does not respond well to intermittent interruptions when trying to stay focused.
Sometimes, the brain needs a little extra help to clear the cobwebs and zone in to the task at hand. StudyPlus has been formulated by a Clinical Psychologist to do just that. Using proven all-natural ingredients it can help the mind focus without the use of harsh stimulants. Taken during the weeks leading up to the exam, StudyPlus will improve memory function and attention span – and in no way negatively affect any other body systems.
  • Help them to stay calm. Sometimes, no matter how much sleep, studying or exercise a student has, on the day of the exam – disaster strikes. As the test is laid on the desk, a student freezes and goes blank. Test anxiety is a known condition and extremely common. Thankfully, there is a natural way to combat exam nerves to help your child stay calm - A+ TestCalmer has been formulated to specifically address the problem of anxiety-induced mental fatigue. It can keep the nervous system relax enough to take the test, without dulling the mental sharpness of the mind. Remember, the brain stores info in many ‘folders’ and A+ TestCalmer takes care of the nerves, so that the brain can do its job and find the info needed!

Above all, give your child support. Doing well in exams, while important, should not become the sole ambition in life. A healthy, well-rounded child is far more important, and more likely to flourish in the larger scheme of things!
